Types of Financial Aid

Over 79 percent of the scholarship assistance we award comes from institutional funds rather than state or federal sources.

Need-based

DePauw University awards scholarships on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated financial need.

Need-based financial aid is calculated from information you and your parents provide on the DePauw University Application for Need-Based Assistance (available in December) and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

When you apply for need-based aid, we will analyze your family's resources carefully on an individual basis. Your application for financial aid is not a factor in the admission decision at DePauw. We will do all we can to assist you and your parents with financial support; however, it is important to remember that the primary responsibility for financing your education rests with you and your family.

Merit Awards and Scholarships for Incoming Students

Merit awards are not based on financial need. Most of these, offered to admitted students on the basis of high school grade point average, rank in class, and SAT I or ACT scores, require no application; all admitted applicants are considered. Several scholarships, however, have additional requirements or require an application.

Merit Scholarships for Upper-class Students

Once a student is enrolled at DePauw University, the only awards recognizing outstanding achievement or special talent are tuition awards given through academic departments or administrative offices. Students may contact academic department chairs regarding departmental awards. There are a few scholarships not based on choice of major. These are tuition only scholarships to be used the following year the student is enrolled at DePauw University. Application processes for awards made through other offices are publicized through The DePauw or posters on campus in February. The awards are not usually renewable, although some students may receive an award for more than one year.

Federal Programs

The Federal Government offers several programs to assist students and parents in meeting educational expenses.

Other Loan Programs

DePauw University encourages students and their parents to utilize their federal loan eligibility (Perkins, F-FELP, Stafford, and F-PLUS) before considering additional funding through alternative loan programs.

Private or alternative loans are available to assist families in bridging the gap between college costs and traditional funding sources. Information is available in the financial aid office on various alternative or private loans.
