Founded in 1837, DePauw University today combines one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation with a school of music whose traditions date back to before Julliard and Eastman were founded. Our students are unusually engaged in shaping their own educations, and in shaping their lives’ paths after DePauw. DePauw students are also exceptionally connected to the world outside our campus, through study abroad, internship programs, and the many programs that bring world leaders in various fields to DePauw’s campus each year. DePauw offers students a curriculum that encourages both academic exploration and the development of deeper expertise in specific disciplines, through classes led by faculty who are recognized authorities in their fields, and deeply dedicated to teaching. Our residential campus and small class sizes gives our students a strong sense of community, and this community supports their efforts as they prepare themselves to make a difference in the world.
Founded in 1837, DePauw today incorporates 36 major buildings on 695 acres, including the 520 acre DePauw Nature Park. East College, built in 1877, is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. The $38 million expanded Julian Science and Mathematics Building includes state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms and is the home base for our technology initiatives. The $15 million Richard E. Peeler Art Center is an 80,000-square-foot facility that includes a large exhibition space; a 90-seat auditorium; and classroom and studio space for ceramics, pottery, sculpture, painting, drawing, digital video, and photography.
One hundred percent of students live on campus and can choose from a diversity of living options – everything from traditional residence halls to Greek Houses, from singles to suites, from University-owned apartments and duplexes to theme houses. Our residential system includes nine residence halls, multiple theme communities, a unique village of small halls, and over 95 University-owned apartment and house units. In our communities, residents have the opportunity to become involved in a variety of leadership, social, and athletic activities.
Our rich mix of extracurricular offerings consists of more than 95 clubs and organizations, including academic and athletic clubs, fraternities, sororities, performing groups, and political and service organizations.
The School of Music, located in the stunning new Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts, provides excellence in undergraduate music training by preparing students for distinction as performers, scholars, and teachers. The supportive educational environment of the School fosters outstanding musicianship, stimulates the intellect, cultivates creative teaching and learning, and inspires achievement in all walks of life. From chamber music concerts to fully-staged opera productions, extraordinary performance opportunities abound. Students may pursue an array of degree options in performance, music education, music with a business emphasis, and music with a second major in the College of Liberal Arts.
Art at DePauw comes in many forms and venues: the Performing Arts Series of events, an active student theatre program, exhibitions at the Peeler Art Center, performances in the School of Music, film screenings, and annual ArtsFest week, to name a few. Students have the opportunity to participate in these opportunities as soon as they arrive at DePauw.
