Art Bryant, a Rector Scholar, earned eight varsity letters in football and
track and graduated form DePauw with distinction. In football, he was a
four-year starter at halfback on offense and cornerback on defense; he ran
the high and low hurdles in track. Bryant was named the most valuable back
in 1954 and the most valuable player in 1955. He rushed for 664 yards in
1955, a school record at the time and currently the fifth best total in
school history. He was voted Athlete of the Year in 1956 and was recipient
of the Sigma Delta Chi Scholar-Athlete Award. As a member of the track
team, he set DePauw and Indiana Collegiate Conference records in the low
hurdles during the 1956 season. Bryant joined the State Life Insurance
Company in Indianapolis as an actuarial student, and he was awarded
fellowship in the Society of Actuaries in 1971. He was elected the
company's senior vice president for marketing in 1980 and chairman of the
board and president in 1985.
