DePauw releases 2002-03 schedule
DePauw's 2002-03 schedule includes three regular season
tournaments as well as the first-ever SCAC postseason tournament. The
Tigers compete in in-season tournaments at Wabash, Franklin and in Las
Vegas. The 14-game SCAC slate follows during the 2003 portion of the
campaign with the top eight teams in the conference advancing to the
SCAC tournament in Memphis, Tenn.

Howland earns second team all-America honors; Nixon an all-region
selection
Senior point guard Mike Howland was named a Division III Second
Team All-America selection by the National Association of Basketball
Coaches after earning first team all-district accolades. Classmate Joe
Nixon was a second team all-region choice.
DePauw's season comes to end at Otterbein
The Tigers led at the break 38-32, but Otterbein rallied in the
second half to take an 87-79 sectional championship win. DePauw
finished the season with a 24-4 record.

Tigers advance to national quarterfinals on Howland's late basket
Senior Mike Howland drove the length of the court and nailed the
game-winning basket that gave seventh-ranked DePauw a 90-87 win over
top-ranked Washington
University in the first game of the sectional semifinal at Otterbein
College.

they will compete in the NCAA Sectional against Washington (Mo.)
University in a 6 p.m. contest on Friday, March 8.

Jeremy Bettis scored a career-high 25 and grabbed 10 rebounds and
Joe Nixon matched hi with 25 as the Tigers knocked off visiting
Wittenberg in the second round of the NCAA tournament by an 89-76

DePauw earns
first-round NCAA bye; hosts Wittenberg on Saturday
The 22-3 Tigers earned a first-round bye in the NCAA Division III
Championship and host Wittenberg University in a second-round game on Saturday,,
March 2 at 7 p.m. Wittenberg defeated Franklin, 75-44 on Thursday.

Mike Howland was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Player of the Year and head coach Bill Fenlon was chosen the Coach of
the Year in voting by the conference's 10 head coaches. Joe Nixon and
Joe Ringger also were first team choices and Jeremy Bettis was a
second team selection.

Jeremy Bettis equaled a career-high with 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the
Tigers finished the regular season at 22-3 overall and 16-2 in the SCAC with an 87-70 win at Sewanee.
Joe Ringger added 19 points in the win. Mike Howland set the SCAC
single-season assists record during the contest and finished with 11.

The Tigers trailed 48-47 with six minutes to play before going on
a 12-1 run on the way to a 65-57 win at Rose-Hulman to improve to 20-3

of the Week
Senior Joe Nixon earned SCAC Player of the Week honors for the
second time this season and extended his SCAC career record total to
eight with his performances in wins over Judson, Southwestern and
Trinity. Nixon averaged 26.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and nailed 18 of 34
three-pointers. He recorded double-doubles against both Judson and
Trinity and scored 30 against Southwestern.

Ringger named SCAC
Player of the Week
Junior Joe Ringger was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Player of the Week for his performances in wins over
Hendrix and Rhodes. In those two contests, Ringger averaged 19 points
and nine rebounds. He scored a career-high 27 points against Rhodes
and grabbed 11 rebounds against Hendrix. For the week, he hit 15 of 20
field goals. This is Ringger's second such honor this season and the
fifth by a DePauw men's player.

Basketball America poll and five spots to eighth in the latest
D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll.
The Tigers, 8-1 in SCAC play, have been ranked 22nd or higher the
entire season. In the season's second series of
NCAA
Division III regional rankings, the Tigers moved from fifth to
second.

The Tigers improved to 13-2 overall and stayed in first in the
SCAC with a 71-67 win over visiting Rose-Hulman. Joe Ringger paced the
12th-ranked Tigers with 16 followed by Joe Nixon with 15 and Jeremy
Bettis with 11. Jon Query led Rose-Hulman with 21.

DePauw battled back from as much as a 14-point second half deficit
to tie the game at 50-50, but host Trinity responded with a 9-0 run
and held the Tigers scoreless over a six-minute stretch on the way to

The Tigers rallied from a nine-point, second-half deficit to
defeat host Southwestern, 85-77. DePauw hit all 10 free throws in the
final minute of the game to preserve the victory. Joe Ringger led the
Tigers with 20 followed by Mike Howland with 19, Joe Nixon with 18 and
Jeremy Bettis with 16.

drops first game of season in overtime
The Tigers, ranked second in Division III by Basketball America,
saw their 16-game win streak over the last two seasons come to an end
on their home court as visiting Earlham knocked off DePauw, 106-101 in
overtime. The Quakers' Travis Brett poured in 38 points and nailed 10
three-pointers to beat the Tigers.

Player of the Week; fourth different Tiger to earn the honor
After a week in which he averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 assists per
game, senior Mike Howland earned
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference co-Player of the Week
honors. He shared the honor with Jonathan Jarrett of Sewanee. Howland
capped off the weekend with 21 points and 10 rebounds in just 24
minutes of the 97-62 win over Oglethorpe. In that game, he hit all
seven of his field goal attempts including five from behind the
three-point line.

straight win
The third-ranked Tigers hit their first 10 shots from the field
and never looked back on the way to a 97-62 victory over visiting
Oglethorpe. Mike Howland led the Tigers with 21 points and 10 assists,
while Joe Ringger and Joe Nixon each scored 16 and Jeremy Bettis added
14. The Tigers shot just under 65 percent from the field. The win
extended DePauw's perfect season to 11-0 and their Division III-best
win streak to 16.

In the first meeting in SCAC history between two teams ranked in
the top 10 nationally, the third-ranked Tigers defeated ninth-ranked
Millsaps 75-60. Joe Nixon led the Tigers with 18 points, while Mike
Howland added 14. Jeremy Bettis recorded a double-double with 13
points and 11 rebounds, while Jon Owens added 10 points. Nixon and
Howland each dished out five assists and Joe Ringger led with 16
rebounds.

Joe Ringger was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Player of the Week after averaging 18.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in
wins at Rhodes and Millsaps. The junior connected on 16 of 27 field
goal attempts in the two wins and was the third different DePauw
player to earn the honor this year.

78-74 win at Rhodes
Four Tigers scored in double figures on the way to a 78-74 victory
at Rhodes. The victory lifted the third-ranked Tigers' overall record
to 9-0 and their SCAC mark to 4-0. Joe Ringger and Jeremy Bettis each
scored 18, while Mike Howland added 17 and Todd Humerickhouse scored a
career-best 11. Ringger added 16 rebounds in the win. DePauw held a
46-19 advantage on the boards. Wes Cain paced
Rhodes with 21 points. The win was DePauw's 14th straight dating back
to last February which is the longest current Division III win streak.

With averages of 12.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in wins
over Wabash, Centre and Sewanee, DePauw junior Jeremy Bettis was named
the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Bettis hit 16 of 23
shots from the field (69.6%), including two of four from three-point
range (50.0%) and three of four from the foul line (75.0%).

The Tigers improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1946-47
season with an 80-61 win over visiting Sewanee. Joe Nixon scored 21,
including 11 in the first 5:26, while Joe Ringger added 17 points and
nine rebounds. Jeremy Bettis posted a double-double with 11 points and
10 rebounds and Mike Howland dished out a career-high 12 assists.

All five DePauw starters scored in double figures in an 83-68 win
over visiting Centre College in the SCAC opener. The Tigers are now
5-0 on the season for their best start since the 1946-47 season. Joe
Nixon led all scorers with 21 points followed by Joe Ringger with 18.
Mike Howland dished out seven assists. James Booker paced Centre with
14 points.

and were never threatened after that by host Wabash in a 78-66 win.

Nixon named SCAC Player of the Week
Senior Joe Nixon was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Player of the Week for the games of November 16-17. Nixon averaged
25.5 points per game in the Tigers' two wins at the Transylvania
Tipoff Tournament. That included 31 points in the season-opening win
over Savannah Art & Design. The SCAC honor was the seventh of his
career.

Tigers raised their season record to 3-0 with a 90-62 win over
visiting Oberlin. Joe Nixon scored 27 and grabbed seven rebounds, both

scored 16 and Jeremy Bettis added 13 in the victory. Howland dished out
six assists. Chris Ikpoh paced Oberlin with 20 points.

Transylvania Tipoff title
Joe Ringger scored 21 and Joe Nixon added 20 as the Tigers knocked
off host Transylvania in their tipoff tournament, 88-84. Mike Howland
added 17 and Jeremy Bettis 15 in the win. Ringger grabbed nine
rebounds for the Tigers. Andrew Coyle led the Pioneers with 26 points.
Nixon was named the tournament MVP, while Ringger was named to the
all-tournament team. Jon Owens was named the tournament's best
defensive player.

The Tigers opened the season with a 94-76 win over Savannah
College of Art & Design in the opening game of the Transylvania
University Tipoff Tournament. Joe Nixon led four DePauw double-figure
scorers with 31 points. Mike Howland added 18, Joe Ringger had 15 and Jeremy Bettis added 13. Keith Davis paced SCAD
with 42 points and 12 rebounds. DePauw advanced to play Transylvania
at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Transylvania defeated Earlham 70-55.

preseason pick in SCAC coaches' poll
With most of the team returning from a 19-6 season that included
wins in the final five games and in nine of the last 10, the Tigers
were the unanimous favorite to win the 2001-02 SCAC title according to
the league's 10 head coaches. DePauw picked up all 10 first-place
votes to total 100 points. Millsaps was second with 86 points and
Rose-Hulman third with 84.
