TIGER WOMEN LOSE AT MANCHESTER; FALL BEHIND IN ICAC RACE
Greencastle, Ind.-- For the DePauw women's basketball
team, Tuesday's 83-72 loss at Manchester provided a very
painful and untimely lesson. Being the "hunted" means coming
to each and every game ready to play and taking the
opponent's best shot.
The Tigers and Spartans appeared to reverse their roles
as the inspired hosts looked like the team battling for a
conference title and a postseason bid, not DePauw.
The loss dropped the Great Lakes Region's sixth-ranked
Tigers to 18-6 on the season and one game behind Indiana
Collegiate Athletic Conference leader Franklin with one game to
play. Manchester closed its season at 9-16 and 5-5.
The lead see-sawed early, but one thing was apparent.
This would be an extremely physical game. The Tigers held a
19-17 lead with 8:59 left in the first half before the Spartans'
Leanne Lake hit one of two free throws to make it 19-18. Jaime
Wilson buried a three-pointer with 8:38 left and Brenda
Simmons hit one of two charity tosses for DePauw to make it
21-20.
Jennifer Sipe and Wilson then nailed consecutive treys
and Wilson another to make it 30-20 with just under five
minutes left. A late Tiger rally closed the gap to three points at
halftime, 37-34. Wilson finished the first half with 17 of her
game-high 28 points. Foul trouble plagued both teams and the
Tigers were without Kingsley, Lana Harrison and Jenn Hein
most of the first half.
DePauw regained the lead at 42-41 on Angela Kingsley's
layup with 16:53 left and still held a 47-45 advantage after
Jana Mathis connected on a pair of free throws with 13:47
remaining. However, the Tigers didn't score for the next 4:29
and Manchester put 14 points on the board to take a 59-47
lead. The Tigers got the deficit back to single digits, but an 11-2
run by the Spartans put the game away.
"They outplayed us in every facet of the game," DePauw
Head Coach Kris Huffman said. "They got in the flow and hit
some threes and that ignited them," Huffman said of
Manchester's scoring runs.
Kelly Morrison led DePauw with 15 points, but eight of
those came in the final 2:25. Mathis added 13 and Kingsley 10.
Lake totaled 19 points, eight assists and four steals for the
Spartans, while Nikki Bailey scored 13 and grabbed 16
rebounds. Janae Kraud added 11 points.
The Spartans shot 48 percent from the floor for the game
and 55 percent in the second half, while the Tigers shot just 34
percent for the contest.
DePauw rounds out the regular season at 1 p.m. on
Saturday at Rose-Hulman.
