Carter was named the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996 and led the Tigers to a perfect 11-0 conference record in three years of play.
A 1986 graduate of Earlham College, Carter played four years for the Hustlin' Quakers. He worked there as an assistant coach in the fall following graduation and then again from 1988 before coming to DePauw in 1990.
In addition to his duties as soccer coach, Carter is also the director of DePauw's Indoor Tennis and Track Center and a part-time instructor in the department of kinesiology. Carter currently serves as Indiana girls' Olympic Development Program state coach.
