Senior Capstone Requirement

All music majors are required to complete a capstone experience during the senior year.

For performance majors (B.M. degree), the senior requirement is satisfied by the successful completion of the senior recital jury and subsequent public performance.

For music education majors (B.M.E. degree), the senior requirement involves the successful completion of student teaching and any related projects required by the Education Department.

For B.M.A. and B.A. degree students, the senior requirement is fulfilled by satisfactory completion of the Senior Seminar (MUS 450), which culminates in a written document and oral presentation in the seminar.

Substitution of a recital for Senior Seminar

Seniors in the Bachelor of Musical Arts degree program may petition to give a recital in lieu of their senior seminar and project. Like the BM senior recitals, these recitals must contain at least 60 minutes of music in order to fulfill this requirement. Students must have the approval of the majority of faculty members in their performance area (strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, keyboard, voice) as well as the Dean of the School of Music. This approval is obtained at the sixth or seventh semester jury, so that the student still has the option to register for the Senior Seminar in the eighth semester, if approval is not given. If approval is granted, the student must pass a recital jury no later than two weeks prior to the recital. Students hoping to give a BMA Senior Recital should follow the guidelines posted in the Junior and Senior Recital section regarding scheduling and program materials.
