Art of Judith Nevins Bush '71 Spotlighted in Southern Illinoisian

July 6, 2003

July 6, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - "Judith Nevins Bush of Murphysboro, an art graduate from DePauw University and Indiana University, has contributed a series of masks and paintings" to an exhibition at the Southern Illinois Artisans Shop in Whittington, notes an article in the Southern Illinoisian. Of Bush, a 1971 graduate of DePauw, Michael Allan Thomas writes, "Her work with masks was the result of a bad inflammation in her right hand, making it difficult to hold a paintbrush. Bush fashioned and fired masks in raku. 'I also found some masks in thrift stores that were so ugly that I felt sorry for them and gave them a rebirth,' she added.

The story points out that "Bush also contributed several paintings in mixed media. Many of them have animal themes, such as Red Monkeys, which displays the strong influence of her expertise as a professional graphic design artist. The simple lines and colors of her paintings flow effortlessly in a primitive yet exciting blend."

The exhibition, "2 Wild Women," which features the work of Bush and Sarah Shoot, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and continues until July 31. You can read dp newspaperthe article in its entirety at the Illinoisian's Web site by clicking here.
