By popular demand, here are the candidates' platforms:
Student Government President and Executive Vice President (1 slate)
John Schomburg and Cathryn Richter
Leaders For Change: As upperclassmen that care about DePauw, we hope to affect positive change on campus. We both have extensive experience with student government, including serving as previous executive board members. We have also worked as congress representatives and acted as representatives on faculty committees, as well as being leaders in our various organizations. Through these experiences, we have gathered valuable insight which will allow us to efficiently resolve campus issues and effectively represent the voice of the student body to the faculty and administration. In the recent past, the University has been tarnished with scandal and poor publicity. However, we believe that there is a role for student government to directly confront issues that will prove that all publicity is not true. Campus discrimination has been at the forefront of many minds and we hope to continue having open dialogue with students and faculty in order to increase awareness and improve the situation. We also plan to tackle building renovations on campus, study abroad issues, and developing a social center which provides a welcoming social space for students. We believe that by solving these issues and others, we can bring back the legitimacy of student government and improve the DePauw Community. We want to be a voice for the students in order to make improvements in areas where we and other students see necessary. We urge you to vote for John Schomburg and Cathryn Richter on April 11th for Student Government President and Executive Vice President.
Vice President of Finance (1 candidate)
Greg Giometti
Since I began to serve on the allocations board for student congress, my interest in the position of VP of Finance has grown. I am a first-year economics and mathematics major and am extremely interested in finance. Being on the allocations board has educated me on both the financial inner workings of our student government and the diverse organizations that are members of this congress. I would like to take a more active roll in student congress and I see the position of VP of Finance as the best way to accomplish this. It will not only give me exposure to the budgeting of funds but it will allow me to have a voice on the executive board. I will devote the time that is necessary to make sure that all of the student funds are properly and fairly allocated, but I will also do whatever I can to address issues that affect the entire campus. I am passionate about everything that I undertake, and the position of VP of Finance for student congress will be no exception.
Vice President of Student Affairs (2 candidates)
Eleese N. Dorsey
The position of Vice President of Student Affairs is a vital and serious position to hold within the governing body of Student Congress. As VP of Student Affairs you represent over 100 diverse organizations which in some aspect contribute to the identity of each individual on campus. It is the responsibility of this individual to accurately serve as the liaison between organizations and Congress executive board to ensure each organization’s voice is considered during all decision making processes.
If given the opportunity to serve my peers in this manner, I fully intend to work diligently and professionally with the students, faculty and staff to ensure that issues and concerns involving each organization on this campus is properly addressed. I will commit to making myself available to attend any organizational meetings to discuss any issues at hand when needed. I also intend to make myself accessible after every Congress meeting to discuss and be of assistance to anyone who may have concerns involving their organization. I am confident that my past leadership positions have enhanced my ability to communicate effectively and efficiently on a professional level. In effect, this will allow me to fully develop and build professional relationships with faculty and staff on campus which will contribute to my ability to better serve the DePauw community.
Alycia Keller
DSG has been my true passion and primary commitment during my two years at DePauw. I have extensive DSG experience, having served on Exec as DSG Secretary, Student Cabinet, Jurisprudence Committee, Government Evaluations Committee, Alcohol and Drug Task Force, and as a Congress Rep. During my involvement, I have become informed about the interests and concerns of our student organizations, developed relationships with various campus leaders and administrators, and know the importance of organization, dedication and collaboration.
If elected as VP of Student Affairs, my main objective would be to serve as a resource for students by acting as a liaison between groups, promoting collaborative social, educational and philanthropic programming with the intention of fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of the diverse interests of DePauw’s student organizations. I also believe that discussions on diversity, discrimination, the need for a student social space and the vandalism of artwork should continue and I would help to put ideas generated by these discussions into action. I know the importance of communication and would ensure that expectations and deadlines associated with the organization recognition process are clear, thoroughly explained and practical, eliminating the frustration and confusion associated with this process in the past. I would also chair and hold regular meetings of the Student Concerns Committee to provide a forum for student to identify and address new and ongoing concerns. I would be sure to report weekly about the issues discussed in that committee as well as in SLAAC, FAB and Faculty meetings.
Vice President of Academic Affairs (1 candidate)
Jon Ferguson
As Vice President of Academic Affairs, I want to represent the students’ opinions and wants in regard to academic policies on campus. I believe that too many times students are not listened to as well as they should be. By attending CAPP (Committee on Academic Programming and Policy), I want to create a better outlet for student concern to be voiced to faculty. I have several goals for next year if I am elected. One of these is to re-evaluate the time banks. If the new time banks that have been written are approved they need to be adjusted and corrected according to student concerns. Another issue that I think needs to be addressed is the lack of minority faculty. We as a DePauw community need to be more representative of all students. I also would like to further address the issue of having lab credits count as more than just a single credit.
Graduate Member to the Board of Trustees (2 candidates)
Kyle Hawkins
My name is Kyle Hawkins and I am running for the Graduate Member to the Board of Trustees. I feel that this is a vital position to the continuing relationship between the Board of Trustees and the student body and I think I can do a lot to bridge that gap in order to accomplish things on campus. Through my 3 ½ years of leadership on this campus I have had the opportunity to participate in five Board of Trustees meetings, including the recent board retreat in which I not only became very familiar with the current Board members, but also the way in which the Board operates. I feel that through my leadership positions of IFC President, Relay for Life co-chair, Student Congress rep, Student Cabinet, and being a member of several other organizations, I have had the opportunity to become well aware of the current issues facing DePauw. I have been a part of the continuing conversations, with both students and administrators, regarding diversity and Greek Life and believe those will be the two most important issues facing this campus for a least the next several years. Another goal of mine is to clearly define the role of this position for students, since it doesn’t currently exist and many people do not know what the position should entail. Since I am limited on the detail of my platform, I encourage interested students to contact me further about any of my goals and hopes for the upcoming years.
Ian MacLeod
As our University changes, we as students and future alumni need to be included in the discussions/dialogues that will alter and shape our University’s future. To do this there needs to be better communication between the students and the Board of Trustees. As a Student-Athlete and being highly involved with Student Government I believe I have a good understanding of current issues on campus. There should be monthly updates by the Board of Trustees on what current issues they are discussing. A member of the Board should take part in Cabinet via phone/video conference to update Trustees on current issues on campus. The more involved students are with the members of the Board of Trustees the better it will be for everyone.
Graduate Member to the Alumni Board (3 candidates)
Lindsay Bartlett
As the Graduate Member to the Alumni Board, I want to make it my first priority to keep the alumni informed of student happenings and students more informed of alumni happenings. I am positive that as a student involved in sorority life, theatre, United DePauw, and a mentor, I am well suited to understand the diverse issues of the students. I have worked with the previous elected Alumni Board members, and I can bring a new voice to instill change.
One of the goals I have is getting class of 2007 more involved after graduation. I want the recent graduates to stay in contact with the University through activities like Golden Paths. If this continues to flourish the University and the recent alumni can have more of a cohesive relationship.
I also want to work with the different alumni associations to increase interaction between students and alumni. I feel that it is very important to know what and where alumni are in order to further DePauw connections.
I am very concerned with the future of the Nature Park. I believe as if this is the next big step to advancing the university. I want to get more attention paid towards the Nature Park that will benefit DePauw in the future. Secondly, I want to work with the Greek community to further relationships on campus. Since the recent events involving the Greek community, alumni and students need to better their communication to form a more perfect bond so miscommunication can be
Katrina Brent
What does it mean to be a DePauw Alum? To me, it’s more than being someone that attended DePauw. During my time here I have held several student leadership positions that have given me the opportunity to work with various groups including, the Alumni Board of Directors, Board of Visitors, Alumni of Color Advisory Council, and the Board of Trustees. Often Alumni have asked me what is the campus climate and/or pressing student issues, because they want to help, but don’t always know how. The Alumni Association is a great organization that I want to inform students on how to utilize. This is my motivation for running for the position of Graduate Member to the Alumni Board. If elected I would like to increase the relationship between current students and alumni. Once on the board I want to:
- Establish open lines of communication so that I can effectively represent the students’ voices
- Work with Student Government and current students, to find out what issues are affecting students and inform Alumni of these issues. Then strategize ways for Alumni to help with these issues
- Increase networking opportunities for DePauw students and alumni by working with student organizations and the Greek system to inform them of alumni events, and create new ideas of other events that students would like to see happen
- Contact recent alumni and encourage them to start becoming active alumni now, so they will continue to support and be enthusiastic about DePauw later in life
Abigail Trainor
My passion to remain dedicated and loyal to DePauw can be empowered by electing me to the Alumni Board. For the past two years, I have been an intern at DePauw’s Alumni Office and also served as an executive member for the Black & Gold Student Alumni Association. Through these positions I have been able to help coordinate numerous activities such as Career Night and regional alumni events. This has given me a unique perspective into the relationship between the University and the alumni allowing me to realize these are still areas to be improved.
As we all know, our Greek system has been a focus of much attention over the last several months and in recent years. I will make it a priority to encourage open communication between all students and alumni on the subject so that each group has a voice in the matter. It is important that we work together to strengthen our system of traditions and values.
Networking is the key to success to current students and our alumni, both young and old. The “DePauw Network” is one-of-a-kind and can be used in so many ways. However, its use is not at the level it should be. As a member of the Alumni Board I pledge to strengthen our network and increase its utilization.
These are two issues we are currently facing, but many others may arise. On the Alumni Board, I will use my experience and determination to represent each concern of every student. |

For Tenure review candidates by August 27, 2007
For Interim review candidates by October 8, 2007
For Term review candidates by September 17, 2007
Because of the University’s open file policy, the candidate will see all such submissions. Thus, you are asked either to indicate your awareness of this in your letter, or to complete and attach an open file form which can be obtained at the COF website or in the Office of Academic Affairs, 305 Harrison Hall.
The most helpful letters are those confined to personal experience of the letter writer. Since the criteria for review cover a broad set of categories spread over teaching, professional development, and service, your letter should only speak to your first-hand experience with the faculty member under review. It is neither helpful nor appropriate for a letter writer to make a recommendation for the outcome (e.g., granting tenure or promotion) since that implies a judgment based on incomplete information. A formal recommendation will be made by the review committees upon examination of all lines of evidence contained in the decision file. |
