| February is Financial Aid Awareness Month |
Indiana residents must have completed and submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so that it is received no later than March 10 in order to receive state scholarship funds. The state of Indiana accepts no excuses for missing this deadline! Out of state residents have a bit more time but still must file the FAFSA no later than April 1 or they will lose scholarship money.
Students must file electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov or pick up a FAFSA worksheet or FAFSA at the local library, a high school or in the Financial Aid Office. A letter, a DePauw need based application and a filing check list were mailed to a student’s UB Box in December. If students did not receive this mailing, they should contact the Financial Aid Office immediately to get the forms to file. The Financial Aid Office is in the Administration Building or can be reached at 658-4030. Hours are from 8am-4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Students needing help to complete the FAFSA are encouraged to come to the Financial Aid Office to talk to one of the counselors who will provide answers to financial aid questions and can help complete the FAFSA. DePauw also hosts a College Goal Sunday site scheduled for 2pm on Sunday, February 11 in the Olin Building Auditorium.
Remember: Indiana residents must file the FAFSA by March 1 for DePauw and out-of-state residents no later than April 1 or they could lose up to $500 per month of DePauw need based scholarship money for missing the deadlines. If anyone needs help, it is available. The Financial Aid staff wants to make sure no one loses any funds, but it is the student’s and the student’s parent’s responsibility to file on time. |

Prelaw Panel with Brian Garrison J.D.
February 8
6pm
Legislative Room 115 E in the PAC
DePauw Pre-Law members are encouraged to come hear from DePauw graduate and attorney Brian Garrison (Chicago ’01) about his experience in the classroom and in the courtroom.
In our country today, students growing up in low-income public schools will be afforded far fewer educational opportunities than their more affluent peers. In fact, by the time they’re 9 year-olds, 4th grade in low-income areas trail their wealthier peers in math and reading by three grade levels. That gap doesn’t close. By 8th grade, they are still a staggering three grade levels behind. And in high school, students in urban secondary schools have less than a 50 percent chance of getting a math or science teacher who has at least a minor in that subject.
So why are students achieving at such different levels? Teach For America corps members like Brian Garrison proved that ability is not correlated with socioeconomic status—rather, all children can achieve at the same level if given the same opportunity. Come hear why 23 of the top 25 law schools—Harvard, Stanford, and Yale for instance—value the leadership that Teach For America corps members exhibit and offer automatic 2-year deferrals to corps members.
For any questions please contact icampos@depauw.edu, sajohnson@depauw.edu, or sara.kaufman@teachforamerica.org |
