Leaders Talking With Leaders: Defining the DePauw Community

Have you heard the words “Coalition for a Responsible Community” or “DePauw Community Covenant” but are unsure what they mean?

Do you want to continue your involvement at DePauw or begin to deepen your commitment to our community?

Do you want to have a conversation with other first-year students about what the legacy of your class should be in your time at DePauw and beyond?

Please join a small group of first-year students for dinner as we explore DePauw as a community of citizens who want to make an impact. We hope to have an engaging and casual dialogue about what the DePauw community means to us as individuals and how we can all play a role in shaping the community we hope to sustain.

Please sign up for one of three available sessions. All sessions will last from 5-6:15pm in Reese Hall Lobby (the center building of Rector Village).
DINNER WILL BE SERVED!!

Martin Luther King Day Convocation
Monday, January 15
Noon-4pm
Lilly Center

Lee Mun Wah, of StirFry Seminars will be presenting a workshop entitled "An Unfinished Conversation." Participants will view a short film and then dialogue together in small groups. StirFry seminars operates from a philosophy which states: "individuals need to interact and to learn from each other. We believe alliances can be built when people engage in open and honest dialogue. As individuals learn what has kept them apart, they can develop new ways of working cooperatively by creating new models of shared resources and perspectives."

Persons are encouraged to participate in the entire program.

Putnam County’s (free) Public Celebration
Monday, January 15
10am-12pm
Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church
Gobin Church is located one block south of the intersection of Seminary and Locust Streets at 307 Simpson Street.

Martin Luther King (MLK) Day 2007 carries the theme Defying the Odds and highlights the story of Greencastle resident, DePauw alumnus and world-renown chemist, Dr. Percy Lavon Julian. His story will be told through a clip of the soon-to-be-released NOVA documentary, Forgotten Genius. Like Dr. King, Dr. Julian successfully defied an unjust system and became one of the 20th century’s most accomplished scientists. Putnam County school children will sing songs, and the Spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards will be presented.

For the second hour of the celebration, the audience is invited to the Activities Fair, where they will find games, cake, books, and prizes. An audio-visual montage of Dr. King’s 1960 sermon, delivered from the pulpit of Gobin Church, will also be shown.

Donations of new children’s underwear and socks and/or cans of food are appreciated.

This program is sponsored by Putnam County Public Library, Putnam County Museum, Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, Putnam County School Corporations, NAACP, Bright Futures, DePauw University, Greencastle League of Women Voters, Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce and Sodexho.

Documentary: Four Black Women on DePauw University's Campus

January 12
2pm
Emison 211

Four Black Women On DePauw University's Campus
Facilitators: Ray Burgman, Diane Hightower & Nissy Stetson-Grace

This documentary is about four Black women:
Raymonda Burgman (33)
Corinne McWilliams (20)
Olufisayo Oluwadiya (20)
Keyaira Wynn (21)

However, it is for everyone to learn more about themselves as people in roles such as sister, brother, niece, nephew, aunt, or uncle. The documentary explores life experiences, which overlap at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.

The filmmaker, Chinonye Chuku, a December 2006 DePauw graduate, shot the footage during fall 2006, not for a class, but for discovery.

The first campus viewing of this enlightening and thoughtful film was on November 16, 2006.
