Greek Fact-Finding Commission Report

Lisa Hollander, Chair of the Greek Fact-Finding Commission, will hold a series of meetings next week for faculty members, students and staff members to highlight key findings from the Greek Fact-Finding Commission Report and respond to questions.

The Report may be accessed at http://www.depauw.edu/univ/greekfacts/.

These presentations will be the first of multiple opportunities to talk about the issues identified by the Commission’s research and data analysis. After this series of meetings, Dr. Bottoms will contact many campus groups for more detailed conversations. As President Bottoms reflects on the facts contained in the GFFC Report and considers possible improvements, we hope that all members of the DePauw community will participate to ensure a robust discussion.

Women in Science luncheon

Please join us for the next Women in Science luncheon on Thursday, October 5, at noon in the Olin Auditorium (please note the different location). This month's luncheon will feature a special guest, Senior Forensic Specialist, Dr. Mary Curtis, from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, who will discuss her career path as well as forensic science in an informal setting.

Dr. Curtis will also be giving a more formal talk entitled "Wildlife Forensics: Wildlife Science Meets the Law: A Crossroads or a Roundabout?" This talk will be at 4pm Oct. 5 in the Olin Auditorium. In addition to being an accomplished scientist, Dr. Curtis is a DPU alumna, and we are so excited to have her back on campus!

Everyone who is interested in science is invited to attend and enjoy some free lunch from Subway. Please RSVP to Robin DiRocco before 10am on Wednesday, October 4, so we know how much food to order. Also, please let Robin know if you would care for a vegetarian option.

Annual Depression Screening Day

DePauw Counseling Services will offer its Annual Depression Screening Day on Thursday,
October 5 from 8am - 2pm in the Lobby of the Union Building.

The screenings are confidential and take only 5-10 minutes to complete. This includes the time when counselors interpret screening results and provide follow-up recommendations. Each student who completes a screening will receive a free plant (while supplies last).

Can't make it to Blackstock on Saturday? Do your parents want to keep up with DePauw Athletics? WGRE airs all of the Tiger football games each Saturday of the 2006 season. This week, you can listen live to the Tigers play against Sewanee - the University of the
South - at Blackstock Stadium.

The game starts at 1:30pm, and WGRE will have a pre-game show one hour beforehand.

GOLDen Paths

Are you trying to find the path to your career (or just a job after graduation)?

Well, come to Meherry Hall on Monday night, October 9 from 7:30-8:30pm for the GOLDen Paths event sponsored by the GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Council.

A panel of four young alumni will be back on campus to talk about the path their career has taken, and provide their thoughts regarding the on-campus opportunities they found helpful to them while at DePauw.

Our four alumni panelists are:

Kyle Salyers is a 1996 graduate of DePauw, who majored in Sociology. Kyle is the Executive Director of Advancing Indiana and Special Consultant to the President of Indiana University for Economic Development.

Jason Kreag is a 1997 graduate of DePauw, who majored in Economics. Jason recently put his law practice on hold to return to DePauw as the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach.

Ashley Barnett is a 2002 graduate of DePauw University, who majored in Sociology. Ashley is currently a Family Case Manager with the Indiana Department of Family and Children.

Tara Fleck (Bevington) is a 2003 graduate of DePauw, who majored in Communication. Tara is currently the Campaign Director of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Michael Bogers, a 2001 graduate of DePauw and current President of the GOLD Council, will moderate the panel. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session following the remarks of the panel.

Help hurricane victims during Fall Break

Hartman House Alternative Fall Break Service Trip

There is one more interest meeting for the Alternative Fall Break Service Trip at 4:30pm today (Wednesday) in Terrace Room C in the Union Building (by the Ballroom). We're going to Biloxi, MS to gut / rebuild houses to help victims move back into their homes and into their lives.

Come learn how to affect lives in a meaningful way while having a great time. When was the last chance you had to help people by ripping down walls and using sledge hammers on kitchen sinks?

Dr. Goldstein is currently working on a long-term project that investigates HIV/AIDS pharmaceutical politics in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, comparing issues of national sovereignty, globalization, and gender politics as they manifest in these three distinct settings. This project has evolved out of her Brazil research and her ongoing interests in nationalism, global capitalism, body politics and medical anthropology. Dr. Goldstein will speak on race, class, sex and violence in a shantytown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

DePauw professor and Indianapolis bassist Jack Helsley leads a performance by his contemporary trio 3rd Man. Bringing listeners modern contemporary jazz in the vein of greats such as Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell, 3rd Man's fresh sound should not be missed. Free and open to the public.

DePauw alumus and acclaimed lyric tenor Thomas Cooley returns to campus for this highly anticipated vocal recital. The tenor has already made a considerable name for himself in both the concert hall and operatic stage, appearing with the likes of the Bavarian State Opera, the Krakow State Opera, the Minnesota Opera, North Star Opera, and Ex Machina Baroque Opera in roles such as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Sam Kaplan in Street Scene, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni,Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Count Almaviva in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Oronte in Handel's Alcina, Leandro in Busoni's Arlecchino and Ugone in Handel's Flavio. Thomas Cooley's extreme versatility is also evident in his concert work, to which he dedicates much of his time. He has appeared internationally with numerous orchestras and ensembles including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Bach Collegium Stuttgart, the Munich Bach Choir, the Bamberg Symphony Choir, the Slovenian Philharmonic, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and the Drottningholms Baroque Ensemble. He is joined by DePauw professor and pianist John Clodfelter.
