North Putnam High School

Students in the Manning Lab
Students from North Putnam High School dropped by the
Manning lab for a quick introduction to some of the research
projects ongoing at the Nature Park.

The 9th grade science class from North Putnam High School visited the Nature Park for a field trip on Wednesday, October 4, 2006. There were about 40 students in the group. The visit was arranged and led by Mrs. Stepp, science teacher from North Putnam High School, and Megan Michael, intern from DePauw University.

The activities were:

  • investigation of soil compaction
  • tour of the quarry
  • introduction to succession
  • introduction to current research at the Nature Park

North Putnam Student
Students looked at soil compaction in areas near gravel
trails in the Nature Park. The students measured soil
compaction by measuring the amount of time necessary
for one cup of water to drain completely out of a given
amount of soil.

The students also looked at how quickly water
drains from potting soil.
