Waste Management

DePauw sophomore Craig Melancone, class of 2011, produced a video guide to recycling on campus that appears below:
In the following pages, you will find more guidance on how to correctly handle waste at DePauw. If you care about waste management, help influence those around you to follow these steps, too.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle

“The 3 R's” have become somewhat of a mantra in environmentalism:

  • Reduce your environmental impact by buying less overall and purchasing “green" products that
    • are post-consumer recycled
    • have little packaging
    • use environmentally friendly chemicals
    • can be reused mulitple times

  • Reuse items as much as possible.

  • Recycle items and packaging that industries can reform into new products.

Despite these effort, society is not going to eliminate trash anyytime in the near future. That is why we should do our best in the present to do all we can with the waste we create.

It is just as important to consider the social justice implications of the waste we create. Where does it go, and who deals with it after we've disposed of it?
