Leaves are 3 inches long, oblanceolate or elliptic, finely serrated along edges, leaf bases are wedge-shaped, leaf tips are rounded. Leaves are leathery, dark green above, pale green below.

Flowers:
Flowers are produced in clusters. Each flower has five white petals, about ½ inch in diameter.
Fruit:
Fruit is a dark red berry, produced in small drooping clusters

Twigs produce unbranched thorns, up to 4 inches long

“Haw” is from the German for “hedge.” The genus name Crataegus is from the Greek kratos for “strength” because of the hard wood of the tree.
