How to Become a Tutor
Do you enjoy writing and offering feedback to peers on their writing? The Writing Center is always looking for enthusiastic and dependable tutors.
The hiring process takes place once a year in the spring semester; selected students then take a .5-credit course in the fall. Students who successfully complete the course and are in good academic standing become tutors. If you are interested in applying, please email Writing Center Director Lynn Ishikawa (lynnishikawa@depauw.edu).
Students can self-nominate or be nominated by a faculty or staff member to apply. Applications are typically available in March or April and include a form, two faculty/staff recommendations, and two writing samples. Students selected for an interview will meet with the Writing Center director as well as a current tutor, usually in the last week of classes. Final decisions are made over the summer, and students enroll in UNIV 301 with a special access code. UNIV 301 is exempt from tuition overload charges.
