English Language and Writing Placement for International Students
DePauw's writing-intensive courses are designed to teach critical thinking through college-level writing and to help students communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.
First-year degree-seeking international students are required to take a written assessment upon arrival at DePauw. If it is determined that the student would benefit from supplemental English language or writing instruction, the student is placed in English 110 or English 115. In addition, all first-year students take a writing-intensive First-Year Seminar.
International exchange students also participate in the placement process, although enrollment is optional.
All international students are welcome to consult about English language skills with the Director of English for Academic Purposes, and may also seek assistance at the Writing Center.
Students are expected to complete ENG 110 or 115 in the semester assigned. Students placed in ENG 110 in the Fall Semester will be expected to take ENG 115 in the Spring. They may withdraw from these courses only under exceptional circumstances, such as extended illness, with the permission of the Petitions Committee.
