197A: FYS:Concert Music and Society

What is the difference between a concerto and symphony? Why does BugsBunny wear a horned Viking helmet when singing opera? To start to answer these questions is to consider the role of concert music and the cultures that created them. This class will begin with a brief exploration of basic musical terms and concepts followed by a chronological review of selected works of Western concert music to consider what these works say about the times they were written and why this music is worth preserving and performing today.
