Transfer from DePauw
If you are an F-1 or J-1 student and you want to study at another U.S. college or university, you will need to transfer your immigration status to your new school.
The transfer is required even if you are graduating and pursuing a Masters, Ph.D. or other post-graduate degree at a new school. The only exception is for temporary summer school programs that you participate in while you are an undergraduate student at DePauw.
If you want to transfer your I-20 or DS-2019 record from DePauw to another school, your first step is to get in touch with International Student Affairs to discuss your plans.
How to Transfer your Immigration Status to a New School
1. Consult with International Student Affairs
Touch base with ISA to let them know about your transfer plans. There may be forms required by your new school that ISA will need to fill out so that you can transfer. Make sure to contact your new institution for details.
2. DECIDE ON A TRANSFER (RECORD RELEASE) DATE
In consultation with ISA, you will need to choose a date when DePauw will release your I-20 or DS-2019 record to your new school. The release of your record to your new school will end your program at DePauw.
This date should be a date after the end of your DePauw obligations (study or approved CPT) and before the beginning of classes at your new school.
ISA will enter this date into the SEVIS database so that your new school will be able to produce a new I-20 for you (with the same SEVIS number) after the record release date.
Make sure to consult with ISA about the selection of this record release date, especially if you have any interim travel or work plans that may affect your record release date.
3. Meet your deadlines
We recommend that you set up your transfer (or record release date) well in advance of the beginning of classes at your new school and well in advance of the end of your last semester with DePauw.
If you are graduating from DePauw and plan to pursue a higher level degree, you must discuss your transfer with ISA prior to the end of your grace period. As a reminder:
-
F-1: Grace period ends 60 days after graduation
-
J-1: Grace period ends 30 days after graduation
DePauw needs to enter your transfer information into the SEVIS database prior to the end of the grace period. Your release date can be later.
4. Complete the Transfer Out Form
Complete the “Transfer Out” form as soon as possible to have your current F-1 or J-1 SEVIS record transferred from DePauw University to another SEVP-certified institution.
Students will need to indicate their new school’s SEVIS School Code, so should reach out to their new school for that prior to filling out the form. They will also need to indicate their record release date and contact information for the student immigration office at their new school.
