How to Submit Your Tax Documentation through Sprintax
Follow these steps to fulfill your tax obligation using Sprintax software.
Gather Your Documents
Each person’s tax situation is unique, so the documents you might need could be different than a friends. Some of these documents (passport, I-20, I-94) will be common to all international students. Some (W-2, 1042-S, 1099) will only apply to some individuals.
Have these documents gathered before you start Sprintax or come to a clinic.
List of potential documents:
-
Valid passport
-
Most recent I-20 or DS-2019
-
Most recent I-94
-
SSN or ITIN
-
W-2: This form reports your U.S. income from wages. You should get a separate W-2 from each employer you worked at. Available in ADP or submitted to students through their UB Box.
-
1042-S: This form reports income from scholarship, stipends, or travel grants; or income covered by a tax treaty. Available to students through Sprintax Calculus in late February.
-
1099: This form reports income from sources that are not your employer like investment income.
Create a Sprintax Account
Create a Sprintax account using your DePauw University email address. Once you have created an account, you will be able to log in to submit your documentation the following year, as Sprintax will save your information.
Follow the Sprintax Instructions: Check Your Individual Tax Return
Sprintax will help you determine if you are considered a resident or non-resident for tax purposes. Then, once you have answered all the necessary questions, it will prepare your tax return or Form 8843.
Students should refer to the tax documentation that Sprintax produces for additional instructions. Once the return has been created, students may still need to pay the U.S. and State governments for taxes owed and mail in paper returns, signed in ink.
Making Payment: Don’t Forget to Pay Your Federal and State Taxes
Paying Sprintax: Students will receive a code via email from International Student Affairs that gives them a discount on tax preparation using Sprintax Returns. The discount applies to the preparation of the Federal Return, including the 8843 from. Students will still need to pay for the preparation of the State Return.
Paying the U.S. Government: Once the return has been prepared by Sprintax, students should read the instructions to see if they owe either the U.S. Federal Government or the Indiana State Government. They should follow the instructions provided by Sprintax to make payment.
To complete the yearly Tax Payment process, students must:
-
Pay Sprintax for the preparation of the State Tax return (if required)
-
Pay the U.S. Federal and State governments for any taxes owed to them
-
Mailed the Federal and State Tax returns
Students filing only a form Form 8843 will not have to submit any paperwork to the Indiana Department of the Treasury.
Some students may be able to file their federal taxes electronically. If that is the case, then they will only need to mail their state return to the Indiana Department of the Treasury.
Don’t Forget to Sign and Mail
Once the tax documentation (tax return) is prepared, students should refer to the instructions in the pdf packets. Though some students’ documentation will be electronically filed, the majority of students will still need to mail signed paper copies of their tax documentation to the addresses listed in their packet.
Envelopes are available to students at the CDI, though students will need to mail the documentation by visiting the Greencastle Post Office and paying for the appropriate postage.
Keep A Copy of Your Tax Return on Your Computer for Next Year
As a general rule, you should keep your tax returns for at least three years after you have filed them, according to the IRS. You should also keep them in a special folder on your desktop or in the cloud, so you have easy access to them for your filing in the next tax year.
