Apply for F/J Reentry Visa

If you intend to depart the United States while you are a DePauw student and your F-1 or J-1 entry stamp is expired (or will expire while you are outside of the U.S.), you will need to apply for a new one before you can return to the United States.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to apply for a new visa or renew your visa within the United States. You must apply for it at an embassy or consulate outside of the United States.

The Visa Renewal Process

  • The process is typically the same one that you went through when you first applied for your F-1 or J-1 entry visa

  • You will have to complete the DS-160 form again; then make an appointment at the U.S. consulate or embassy where you’re applying.

  • SEVIS Fee: F-1 students will need to pay the SEVIS fee again if their SEVIS number has changed; J-1 students will need to pay the SEVIS fee again.

Some students may choose to apply for a new reentry visa in their home country. Others may prefer to apply for their visa in a new country. You should refer to your preferred consulate or embassy’s website to see if this is possible; you must also abide by all immigration rules of that country in terms of permission to be there.
