Rooted in the belief that education is critical to a society’s progress toward its democratic ideals, the education studies major and minor are designed to prepare you not for one narrow career track, but for an infinite variety of meaningful contributions to the world around you. No matter where you choose to make your mark, you’ll be ready to do so with a well-rounded background that empowers you to realize your personal agency in community transformation while also exercising the skills and knowledge needed to engage diverse and contradictory points of view.
Through this interdisciplinary program, you will encounter a full range of perspectives on formal and informal education, with a particular focus on history, sociology, curriculum studies, global perspectives, philosophy and political economy. Each course is designed to challenge and engage you, expanding your conceptual horizons and inviting you to discern how system oppression and resistance function as through lines through each topic. You will also have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in various educational settings, whether schools or nature parks, religious communities or activist organizations, corporations or unions.
