Global Health Practicum

A practicum is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to integrate and apply skills and knowledge gained through coursework with experience gained in a professional public health work environment. Global health work environments include not-for-profit organizations, hospitals, local, state, and federal governmental organizations, and for-profit firms among others.

Students with a Global Health major are required to take part in at least one practicum experience (an internship or experiential learning opportunity with a product). This practicum should be completed before (or at least well-underway) when you enroll in GLH 301, a course in which you have a chance to reflect upon your experience and learn how to share about it with others, including future employers or graduate school interviewers. Since it will help you with post-graduation plans, taking GLH 301 in your junior year can be helpful.

Your practicum experience should result in some tangible deliverable, so it should involve more than simply observing. You may do supervised original research, an internship, or perhaps play a leadership role in an experiential learning course such as a January or May term (check with your advisor to make sure your experience will qualify). You may complete your practicum at a not-for-profit organization, a hospital, a health department, or even a for-profit firm. The important part is that you are learning about activities that contribute to public health while developing your public health competencies. Your practicum must involve at least 80 hours of work and must be pre-approved by your advisor and supervised by an experienced public health professional from the practicum site.

On the career and graduate school ideas page you will find some links to short-term opportunities.

Here is a list of past experiences that Global Health majors have completed for their practicum.
