Art history is an interdisciplinary major that invites you to study art through the lens that you find most instructive and interesting, whether religious, literary, anthropological, political, commercial, psychological, feminist, ecological or biological. With a curriculum that encourages open-minded engagement with artistic traditions across place and time, this program nurtures the vital traits of empathy, respect and critical thinking that empower the next generation of scholar-activists to enact meaningful change in their communities. A foundation in art history paves the way for successful careers in many different settings, from museums and galleries to classrooms and nonprofit organizations.
As a student of art history, you will enjoy access to the DePauw University Collection, housing 4,000 objects with particular strengths in American and Japanese art, as well as the galleries at the Peeler Art Center and numerous scholarly databases. You will also have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of many DePauw students who have gained valuable experience by studying off campus or pursuing unique internships with prominent institutions around the country.
