Music Requirements

The academic requirements for music represent a specialized course of study within the larger context of a diverse liberal arts education. Not only are these requirements designed to provide a focused and rigorous approach to the core concepts of the discipline, but they also allow ample opportunities for exploration in other subjects and departments throughout the university. MUS 140, MUS 141, MUS 290 or 390, MUS BAS-VOC (1 credit), MUS 300, MUS 450 or 454

Other Required Courses

4 electives in music. At least one must be at the 300- or 400-level unless a MUS 390 course is taken for the core.

Senior Requirement & Capstone Experience

Students pursuing the B.A. with a major in Music fulfill the capstone requirement by satisfactorily completing MUS 450, Senior Seminar, or MUS 454, Senior Performance/Creation Recital Capstone.

MUS 140, MUS 141, MUS 290 or 390.

MUS BAS-VOC (2 credits), MUS 272, 276 or 277 (1 credit), MUS 282 or 289 (0.5 credit), MUS 272, 274, 276, 277, 282, or 289 (0.5 credit).

Three of the following: MUS 200, MUS 203, MUS 205, MUS 210.

MUS 300, MUS 310, MUS 450 or 454

Four elective in MUS, at least one at the 300- or 400-level unless MUS 390 is chosen above.

Other Required Courses

Discrete Competency - 5 credits in non-music subjects that form an intended learning pathway.

Other Required Courses

For the Minor in Music, students may choose to take applied music lessons as part of the coursework (an audition is required). Students may take applied lessons in an instrument, voice, or composition within the Institute of Music.

Only 0.25 credits of lessons per semesters, with a total limit of 2 credits over the course of study at DePauw University, may be counted towards fulfilling requirements for the minor.
