Ms. Martin earned her B.M. and M.M. Vocal Performance degrees from the University of Michigan, where she had the honor of singing the Star-Spangled Banner for President Obama in the Michigan Football Stadium. She is currently completing her doctorate degree at Indiana University, where she studies with Carol Vaness and was a recent recipient of the Sarah Joan Tuccelli-Gilbert Memorial Fellowship.
American soprano Mary Martin brings her love and passion for storytelling through singing to the School of Music. An active performer, Ms. Martin is making two role debuts in 2021 –Bea in Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers with South Bend Lyric Opera and Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff with the Indiana University Opera Theatre.
Favorite operatic performance credits include Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor – South Bend Lyric Opera), Governess (Turn of the Screw – IU Opera), Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann – Arbor Opera Theatre), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel – Opera MODO), and Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro – IU Opera. Mary has also performed with Central City Opera Company, the Janiec Opera Company, and New York Opera Exchange. Her oratorio credits include Hanne (Haydn’s The Seasons), and the soprano soloist in The Messiah with Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Carmina Burana with the Midland Symphony Orchestra, as well as Mozart’s Requiem and Faure’s Requiem.

Ms. Martin was an Associate Instructor of Voice at Indiana University for three years, where she worked as a Voice Instructor, Assistant to Opera Workshop, and Secondary Voice Coordinator. She is the director of Michigan Opera Theatre’s Operetta Remix program, which she has directed for the past three years. Mary enjoys guiding her students to explore versatile repertoire, including works from the art song, operatic, and musical theater canon. She focuses on audition and career preparation as well as healthy vocal technique and compelling storytelling. Her students have been accepted to competitive performance degree programs at the University of Michigan, Pepperdine University, New York University, and Ithaca College.
