We know that today's musicians must be accomplished, versatile, exploratory, community engaged and relevant – and DePauw's Institute of Music is here to help you get there.
Students can major in music under two distinct degree tracks: the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Musical Arts. Minors are also available in jazz studies, music, musical theatre and music creation and technology.
No matter your degree or area of study, you will benefit from small class and studio sizes, brilliant faculty and a supportive environment that emphasizes creativity, collaboration and community building.
The Bachelor of Arts offers a curriculum emphasizing an exceptional liberal arts foundation upon which you will build your mastery in music. The music major is comprised of coursework in music theory, music history and literature, as well as performance requirements and music electives.
The B.A. in Music is an excellent choice for students who want a wide range of academic and career options, or would like to combine music with another field.

The Bachelor of Musical Arts offers you an interdisciplinary degree, combining your musical studies with a secondary area of emphasis. This intensive four-year program includes coursework in music theory, musicology, music creation and leadership, as well as performance requirements. Additionally, students will choose a set of courses – with the mentorship and support of your academic adviser – in a field outside of music or a course of studies designed to develop a particular discrete competence.
The B.M.A is an excellent choice for students seeking to hone their musical craft while still exploring and developing another passion – often connected to their musical journey.
