Pamela Gray Mills Casagrande ’60: A Lasting Legacy Through Education

Pamela Gray Mills Casagrande ’60, a proud alumna and dedicated educator, recently passed away at the age of 84. She graduated with honors as an English major, embodying the spirit of academic excellence that DePauw fosters in its students. Her husband, Dr. Peter Casagrande, has established a scholarship at DePauw in her honor. This scholarship will support students majoring in English or Women’s Studies, reflecting Pamela’s own journey and dedication to the field. As we celebrate Pamela Casagrande’s life and legacy through this scholarship gift, her impact on the lives of students will continue to foster a love for literature and learning for many years to come.

During her time at DePauw, Pamela was an active member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed a passion for community engagement. She went on to become a devoted Kappa alumna, serving as president of the local Kappa chapter in Lawrence, Kansas. Throughout her life, she exemplified kindness and dedication to those around her.

Pamela’s love for the water was a central part of her life. For 10 years, she taught water aerobics for seniors and coached a daughter to an all-state swim title while heading the Lawrence Aquahawks. Her passion for swimming and her commitment to helping others were just a few of the many facets of her remarkable character.

Her journey was one of deep and evolving compassion—starting with loving kindness and gradually expanding into a concern for the status of women in this country. Her reading, writings and conversations reflected her enduring commitment to both education and the betterment of women.

Pamela continued her education after DePauw, earning a master’s degree in English Education from Indiana University. Later, she earned her second master's degree from Loyola University of New Orleans in Pastoral Theology. It was at Indiana University that she met her future husband, Peter Casagrande, with whom she shared a remarkable 62 years of marriage.

Together, Pamela and Peter raised five children: daughters Teresa Casagrande, Elizabeth Shields, the late Antonia Casagrande, and sons Chris and Vincent Casagrande. The couple’s family was further enriched by the joy of six grandchildren. Pamela was a devoted mother and grandmother, instilling in them a love for learning and a deep appreciation for literature.

Pamela’s legacy as an educator and mentor will continue to inspire future generations. In her honor, Dr. Peter Casagrande has established an endowed scholarship at DePauw University, ensuring that Pamela’s passion for education and her commitment to helping others will live on.
