Faces of DePauw
Scott Wilkerson Faculty
At DePauw, it is common for students to take part in exciting, cutting-edge research with faculty members.
Applied learning. Real solutions.
Out of graduate school, I worked for 3.5 years gaining invaluable experience with Exxon Production Research, but my passion was to teach and conduct research in a university setting. I fell in love with DePauw the moment I set foot on campus for my interview, and now as I begin my 22nd year, I can’t imagine being anywhere else.
My primary role at DePauw as a Professor of Geosciences is a teacher, but I am also involving students in my research. At DePauw, it is common for students to take part in exciting, cutting-edge research with faculty members that leverages content from their coursework and innovative technologies in their discipline to solve real-world applied problems.
For example, my research students and I employ advanced, industry-standard approaches using various map and cross-section software applications, Google Earth and an augmented reality sandbox to interpret our field observations of complexly deformed areas. Not only does this work give meaning to what we are covering in textbooks, but it also creates a unique learning experience that serves students very well in their future careers.
