BATES BEEF: Ruminations from Rural Indiana
March 3 – April 6, 2025
Peeler Art Center, Visual Arts Gallery
GREENCASTLE, Ind. – DePauw University’s Peeler Art Center is pleased to announce BATES BEEF: Ruminations from Rural Indiana, a solo exhibition by Cloverdale-based artist Jerry Bates, on view from March 3 to April 6, 2025, in the Visual Arts Gallery. This exhibition features Bates’ mixed-media sculptures and installations, inspired by the materials and landscapes of his family’s cattle farm.
Bates, who has served as DePauw’s Art Studio Manager and Gallery Preparator for over a decade, is a vital contributor to the university’s art community. His artistic practice incorporates found objects—such as corrugated metal, farm machinery parts, straw, and reclaimed wood—transforming them into works that explore contemporary issues with a touch of humor.
In addition to his role at DePauw, Bates serves on the Board of Directors for the Putnam County Museum, reflecting his commitment to preserving and promoting local history and culture. His previous collaborative projects include working with DePauw English Professor Joe Heithaus on the Word Hunger project, where Bates designed and executed the display of Heithaus' poem What Grows Here on a local barn, merging art and agriculture to engage the community.
An artist talk and reception will be held on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the Peeler Art Center. This event is free and open to the public.
