Greencastle Swim Lessons Continue with Assist from DePauw
June 21, 2001
June 21, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - A mechanical problem that spilled muriatic acid at Greencastle's municipal swimming pool has temporarily closed the facility, but the youngsters who were taking swimming lessons there won't be sidetracked. DePauw University has opened its pool to the swim students, whose lessons moved to DePauw's Lilly Center Tuesday.
The Lilly Center will continue hosting the lessons until the city-owned pool reopens. The Parks Department says that probably won't happen before next week. "This is a way to reach out to the community and ensure that an important program continues," said Adam Cohen, DePauw Aquatics Director and head coach of the men's swimming team.
Athletics Director Page Cotton added, "we're in the education business and whatever we can do to foster learning, we're happy to assist with. I'm very pleased that area children will still get the opportunity to learn swimming skills."
"One parent came up and thanked me, which was very nice," said Cohen. "This reaffirms the important relationship between DePauw and the Greencastle community, and to make sure that a glitch doesn't keep young people from learning important skills so they can have a lifetime of safe fun in the water."
