DePauw Theatre Opens With The Diviners This Weekend

September 18, 2001

September 18, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw Theatre will open the 2001-02 season with Indiana native Jim Leonard's The Diviners opening Friday, September 21, at 8 p.m. in Moore Theatre of the Performing Arts Center, and continuing through the following Saturday, September 29. Directed by associate professor of communication arts and sciences Steve Timm, the play chronicles the relationship between Buddy (played by Cody Cranch) -- a young boy with the ability to divine water -- and a Kentucky preacher wrestling with his loss of faith.

When C.C Showers (played by Max Wastler) wanders into the imaginary town of Zion, Indiana, the locals believe that he's the answer to their prayers. Having suffered without a church or minister for ten years, the locals are eager to assign C.C. a ministerial role in their community – a role he rejects.

Set in rural Indiana in the 1930s, the play is a cautionary parable against blind extremism in any form. This popular play was first produced by Hanover College as part of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in 1979.

Performance dates for The Diviners are September 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. with a matinee performance September 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students. Call the Performing Arts Center Box Office at (765) 658-4827 for reservations and further information.
