Prof. Mitch Merback Speaks in Washington, DC Tonight

November 8, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - Mitchell B. Merback, associate professor of art history and chair of the department of art at DePauw University will make a special presentation tonight in Washington, D.C. at the German Historical Institute. Dr. Merback has been invited to deliver a formal talk as part of the Institute's 15th annual lecture.
The featured speaker for tonight's public event is the eminent American medievalist, Caroline Walker Bynum, who will speak on the topic "Violence in Late Medieval Art and Religion." Professor Merback will follow with a 20 minute commentary on Bynum's talk. Both scholarly papers will be published in the spring issue of the GHI Bulletin.
Merback's book, The Thief, the Cross and the Wheel: Pain and the Spectacle of Punishment in Medieval and Renaissance Europewas recently published as a softbound edition by London-based Reaktion Books. It was first published in 1999 by the University of Chicago Press.
