November 8, 2001
November 8, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - Recognized on four continents as one of the world's finest string quartets, The Colorado Quartet will bring its collective talent to DePauw University this Sunday, November 11, 2001. The concert, the third Peforming Arts Series event of the 2001-2002 school year, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall.
The ensemble will perform string quartets by Mozart, Brahms, and Husa. The four-woman group is known for its musical integrity, impassioned playing and lyrical finesse. Based in New York City, the Colorado Quartet has toured more than twenty countries and won numerous outstanding awards. In a ten-day period in 1983, the ensemble made history by winning two of the music world's highest honors: the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and First Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition. The Los Angeles Times opined, “The Colorado Quartet presented a spectacularly accomplished performance...a tight, flawlessly balanced ensemble as well as strong individual presences, centered intonation, a wide dynamic scale, intense concentration, and a convincing interpretive plan..."
The quartet's newest member, Marka Gustavsson, plays the viola and hails from Greencastle. Marka's parents are Louise Reinecke and DePauw Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Roger Gustavsson, who both reside here.
