DePauw University Orchestra Performs Free Concert Sunday Afternoon

March 4, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw University Orchestra will present a free concert this Sunday, March 9, at 3 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium of the Performing Arts Center. The program will be conducted by David Matthies, interim director of the university orchestra, and will include familiar compositions from the standard orchestral repertoire ­A Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Moussorgsky, Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 8.

Dr. Matthies is a native of Winnipeg, Canada, and studied conducting with Joseph Flummerfelt (DePauw 1958) at Westminster Choir College. Matthies earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from Michigan State University, and has been a guest conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as well as orchestras in Pennsylvania and Michigan.
