Former Congressman Lee Hamilton '52 and Former US Ambassador William Brown to Discuss the Middle East April 22

April 9, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - Two internationally respected figures, former U.S. Congressman and 1952 DePauw University graduate Lee Hamilton and William A. Brown, former U.S. Ambassador to Israel and Thailand, will come to DePauw University Tuesday, April 22, to discuss “The Middle East: The Past, Present and Future.” The joint discussion, which will be moderated by DePauw professor of political science Bruce Stinebrickner and feature questions from a panel of DePauw students and faculty members, will take place at 1 p.m. in Meharry Hall of historic East College. The event is free and open to the public.

Lee H. Hamilton served for thirty-four years as a United States Congressman from Indiana, serving as chairman and ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs (now the Committee on International Relations), and chairing the Subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East from the early 1970s until 1993. He also served as Chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran. Mr. Hamilton established himself as a leading congressional voice on foreign affairs, economic policy and congressional organization. He now serves as director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University. Lee Hamilton also remains an important and active voice on matters of international relations and foreign affairs. He is currently a member of the President's Homeland Security Advisory Council, and in December 2002, he was appointed vice-chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States.

William A. Brown's thirty-six year diplomatic career included assignments in Israel (three times), Hong Kong, Taiwan (twice), Singapore, Borneo, Russia (twice), India and Thailand. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Israel twice, from 1989-1992 and 1993-1994, and was U.S. Ambassador to Thailand from 1985-1988. In 1996, Brown served briefly as Special Envoy for Burma (Myanmar). Since retiring from government service, Ambassador Brown has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Harry S. Truman Research Institute For the Advancement of Peace at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also is a member of the board of the American Institute in Taiwan (which conducts US relations with the people of Taiwan), and member of a bank board. Mr. Brown also lectures widely and appears on television and radio programs discussing current events in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Before their joint appearance in the afternoon, Messrs. Hamilton and Brown will visit a political science class Tuesday morning, then will join students and faculty for a luncheon.
