Women's eNews Editorial Cites Prof. Judy George's Research

May 14, 2003

May 14, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - "The puny coverage sportswomen garner has been well documented," writes Sheila Gibbons of Women's eNews in a commentary posted today entitled "Sports News Shortchanges Female Players, Fans." Gibbons continues, "One-year analyses were conducted on 52 Saturday editions of the New York Times and the Indianapolis Star (national and regional readerships, respectively) in 1989 by Judith George and Neal Watson and again in 1999 by George and Ashleigh Griffin of DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana. In the 1989 study, women received 2.7 percent of all sports coverage in the Star, 2.2 percent in the Times. Ten years later, the numbers were 8.6 percent for the Star and 6.7 percent for the Times-- numbers that just don't jibe with the increased attendance at, and popularity of, sports events featuring women."

Judy George (seen in photo at top) is a professor of kinesiology at DePauw. She has authored more than thirty articles that have been published in journals including the Physical Educator and the Canadian Journal of Sports History and has written editorials that have appeared in newspapers across America, including the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and the San Francisco Examiner.
