DePauw-Bound HS Senior Finishes Second in National Geography Contest
May 17, 2003
May 17, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - Kellie Packwood, a senior at Martinsville High School, "finished second in a national AAA geography contest and won a $10,000 scholarship," notes today's Indianapolis Star, adding, "Packwood will attend DePauw University this fall, although she hasn't decided on a major. 'It will probably be economics or business-related,' she said."
The Star's Michael Dabney writes, "The AAA challenge tested the students' knowledge of US and world geography, with an emphasis on travel and tourist destinations. At the nationals last weekend, she placed among the top 12. The finalists were randomly divided into four, three-member teams that competed in a game show-style format. Packwood was the only girl among the top 12. Her team finished second, and each member got $10,000."
The article concludes, "Packwood competed on Martinsville's Spell Bowl team for four years, its academic decathlon team for three years and its Super Bowl team for two years. Her coach in the academic decathlon had nothing but praise for her. 'She would be the dream person for any coach,' said Wayne Babbitt. 'She's bright, dedicated and interested in learning. She is one of the outstanding people we have had on the (academic) teams.'"
