July 21, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - The Rev. Kevin R. Armstrong, a pastor of North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and a 1982 graduate of DePauw University, has been chosen as the primary coordinator of a $57 million program on pastoral excellence at Duke University Divinity School, of which he is a 1985 alumnus. The "Sustaining Pastoral Excellence" program, which Rev. Armstrong will oversee, is funded by Lilly Endowment.
The Hoosier United Methodist News reports that the program "pays for projects in 26 states that are designed to improve support for clergy." Lilly Endowment has provided Sustaining Pastoral Excellence grants totaling $57.9 million to 47 religiously-affiliated institutions in 25 states and the District of Columbia. The program establishes projects to allow ministers of nearly every Christian tradition to create environments for ongoing biblical study, theological reflection and spiritual renewal, as well as the development of sustained friendships and mutual support opportunities. The three- to five-year awards range from $252,355 to $2 million.
