Steve Sanger '68 Elected to Wells Fargo & Co. Board

July 23, 2003

July 23, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - Stephen W. Sanger, chairman and CEO of General Mills, Inc. and a 1968 graduate of DePauw University, has been elected to the board of directors of Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC). The announcement was noted in Silicon Valley Biz Ink.

"We're delighted Steve has joined our Board and look forward to benefiting from his almost three decades of executive management and marketing experience at one of America's most admired companies," said Wells Fargo chairman and CEO Dick Kovacevich. April "Steve's intimate knowledge of how to anticipate, satisfy and exceed the changing needs of diverse consumers -- especially as it pertains to speed to market, convenience, dependability, and trust -- very much align with the goals of our culture and will be invaluable to Wells Fargo as we continue to make progress toward our vision of satisfying all our customers' financial needs and helping them succeed financially."

Sanger also serves on the boards of Target Corporation and the non-profit Catalyst (the research and advisory organization that works to advance women in business), the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and the Minnesota Business Partnership. He is a former chairman of the Grocery Manufacturers of America and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. The story notes that Sanger "received his bachelor's degree in history from DePauw University in 1968, and an MBA from the University of Michigan in 1970."

The fourth annual listing of America's "100 Best Corporate Citizens," in the spring issue of Business Ethics magazine, ranked General Mills #1 (the second place company, Cummins, is also headed by a DePauw alumnus, 1969 graduate Tim Solso; read more here). April General Mills also was named Working Mother magazine's "Family Champion" for "making moms' needs a priority" (read more here). Last November, Steve Sanger hosted a Presidential Reception at General Mills, where he welcomed prospective students, parents and alumni and discussed how DePauw helped him achieve "uncommon success." Sanger stated, "it's just remarkable to me how many of the things that had a profound, lasting effect on my life, in a positive way, all started during that four-year period when I was at DePauw" (read more, and access video and audio clips, here).
