Newspaperman E. K. Shaw '48 Retiring After 67 Years of Service

September 12, 2003

September 12, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - Eustace (E.K.) Shaw, a 1948 graduate of DePauw University, "is stepping down at the end of the year as chairman of the board of directors of the B.F. Shaw Printing Co. after 67 years of affiliation with the firm," notes an article in the Daily Telegraph of Dixon, Illinois, one of Shaw's papers. "E.K. said his career began in 1936 at the age of 11 when he came to work in the family business as a 'fly-boy.' A fly-boy was one who took the papers off the press. He also helped clean up around the press room and office." The story notes Shaw's Navy service during World War II, his subsequent education at DePauw, and his long career as a newspaperman.

Shaw was born in Dixon, where Ronald Reagan lived and served as a lifeguard during his teenage years. "My mother said he guarded me at Lowell Park, but I don't remember it," Shaw tells the newspaper.

Shaw Newspapers owns six daily and seven weekly newspapers in Illinois and Iowa. Clark Kelly writes, "E.K. was named to the board of directors of the B. F. Shaw Printing Co., in 1959. He was named vice president in 1967 and served as vice president and treasurer from 1973 to 1978 when he was named company president. E.K. was elected board chairman in 1993."

In an article in the Northwest Herald of Crystal Lake, Illinois -- another Shaw newspaper -- E.K. Shaw says, ""I still will be around and involved in the company, just not as much as before. I was on the board for 44 years. That is a long time."
