Gen. Wesley Clark Announces Presidential Bid; Tuesday's DePauw Speech Moved to Neal Fieldhouse
September 17, 2003
September 17, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - "We are going to hold this administration accountable for its policies and their results, but remember: the results belong to all of us. They are the foundation upon which we must build anew," said Retired General Wesley K. Clark today as he formally announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, six days before he will come to DePauw University to deliver a Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture.
As General Clark was making his presidential bid official, DePauw administrators announced that his Tuesday speech, which was scheduled to take place in Kresge Auditorium of the Performing Arts Center, is being moved to the more spacious Neal Fieldhouse in the Lilly Center, 702 S. College Avenue. The lecture, "Facing America's Challenges," begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
"The 'buzz' surrounding General Clark's DePauw visit, which was already very strong, has exploded in the past 24 hours," says Ken Owen '82, director of media relations for the University and coordinator of the Ubben Lecture Series. "I've been contacted by several leaders of the 'Draft Clark' campaign, who suggest people may be coming from four or five states to attend the speech. We want to ensure that DePauw students, alumni and staff as well as people in the local community -- in fact, as many folks as possible -- have the opportunity to be on hand Tuesday. Moving the event to a larger venue should guarantee that. However, it would still be a good idea to arrive early as seating is general admission and on a first-come, first-served basis."
Wesley Clark is former commander in chief of the United States European Command, former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO and, as of today, a 2004 presidential candidate. The Ubben Lecture Series has brought distinguished individuals to the DePauw University campus since 1986, including former British Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, General Colin Powell, Ross Perot and, in the 2002-03 school year, Spike Lee, Mike Krzyzewski, Harry Belafonte and ice cream entrepreneurs Ben & Jerry.
