November 24, 2003
November 24, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - Floyd W. Raisor, a 1927 graduate of DePauw University, has been named the Central High School (Muncie, Indiana) Alumnus of the Year. The achievement is noted in a feature in the Muncie Star Press, which says the 98-year-old Raisor "played on the Bearcat basketball team that lost to Vincennes in the state finals in 1923, and then went on to a 45-year career in education, all of it in Muncie... After his playing days at Central were over, he attended DePauw University where he played football and basketball, and got his master's degree at Indiana University."
"Class will come to order," Raisor told those who assembled to celebrate his award. At the event, he said, "There were many people there that I had in school when I was a teacher, and some there were people that I had worked with." The story by Ric Routledge notes that "Catherine [Roe '29], his wife of 74 years, and sons Tom and Phil, attended the ceremony with him Friday at the Central High School cafeteria."
Phil Raisor says, "The one thing most characteristic of both mom and dad, was that even after he retired he continued to teach. He loved to learn something and then teach it to others. Mom and dad set the kind of tone of community service that all of us as children and grandchildren adopted very early, not to be just wrapped up in our personal lives only but to participate and serve the wider community."
