April 5, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University's student-run college newspaper and radio station -- The DePauw and WGRE -- both collected fistfuls of awards over the weekend. The Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) honored The DePauw as Newspaper of the Year for the tenth time in the past eleven years, one of 14 awards Indiana's oldest college newspaper received. Meanwhile, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) honored The DePauw with six and WGREwith three 2003 Region 5 "Mark of Excellence" awards.
In the SPJ contest, DePauw students competed against colleagues from newspapers and radio stations at colleges of all sizes in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. The ICPA competition placed The DePauw in the division two category, for colleges and universities of more than 2,000 full-time students that don't publish a daily newspaper. SPJ awarded The DePauw five first place awards and one third; WGRE brought home two first place prizes and one second. In addition to being named "Best Newspaper" by the ICPA, The DePauwreceived four first place awards, five seconds, and four third places.
