Cummins CEO Tim Solso '69 Remembers J. Irwin Miller

August 17, 2004

August 17, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - Tim Solso, chairman and chief executive officer of Cummins, Inc. and a 1969 graduate of DePauw University, is quoted in an Indianapolis Star story on the passing of J. Irwin Miller, who led Cummins for more than 40 years. The newspaper's Tammy Webber writes that Solso "remembers when Miller gave the commencement speech at the 1997 graduation of Solso's son from Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, a private school Miller had attended. Miller concluded the address by saying, 'Work very hard to learn. Never play it safe. Take the big risk. Failure is not the worst of things. Lose yourself in commitment to others, never counting cost. And always be ashamed, in a world which God loves, to be bored.'"

The article continues, "Solso, on vacation in Africa, echoed that sentiment in an e-mail sent to his staff in Columbus. 'He was perhaps the best example of an individual who could lose himself in commitment to others.'"

Miller, who was 95, died yesterday. Read the complete story by clicking here
