September 14, 2004

September 14, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - James Beckel, professor of trombone in the DePauw University School of Music, will have his work, Fantasy after Schubert, premiered by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Mario Venzago. The debut will take place this Saturday, September 18, at 8 p.m. in the Hilbert Circle Theater in downtown Indianapolis. A second performance will take place the following day, Sunday, September 19, at 3 p.m. in the same venue.

The piece, approximately ten minutes long and based on themes by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), represents what Beckel considers his best composition to date. "I'm very pleased with how the work turned out," exclaims the composer. "I'm also excited with the piece's treatment and performance by Mario and the ISO."
