January 4, 2005
January 4, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - David E. Jones, a newly-elected member of the California State Assembly and 1984 graduate of DePauw University, has been appointed chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee. "Jones said one area of concern, as a former legal aid lawyer, is access to justice," reports the San Francisco Daily Journal.
"After graduating from DePauw University and getting a joint juris doctorate and masters of public policy from Harvard Law School and the Kennedy School of Business, Jones worked for six years in Sacramento providing free legal assistance for the poor," the article continues. "In 1995, he was awarded a White House fellowship and served for three years as counsel to Attorney General Janet Reno under President Clinton."
The story by Linda Rapattoni notes that Jones served two terms on the Sacramento City Council, where "he worked to promote 'smart growth' infill development and fought to pass a living-wage ordinance. Jones has also voiced support for the right of same-sex couples to marry."
