February 8, 2005
February 8, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Javair Gillett, a 2001 graduate of DePauw University, has been appointed strength and conditioning coordinator for Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers. Gillett, who played baseball at DePauw and was a two-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference first baseman, had been serving in a similar position in the Tigers' minor league system. A story at MLB.comnotes, "In his new role, Gillett will be the point man for the Tigers' major league program, from in-season strength maintenance to offseason conditioning plans for each player. That includes working with players who already have intensive plans during the season, most notably All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez."
The article by Jason Beck states, "Gillett is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in exercise science from DePauw University in 2001... Gillett began his Tigers tenure with internships at Double-A Erie in 2002, and Triple-A Toledo the following season. In between, he interned with the NBA's Orlando Magic for the 2002-03 season. In his full-time minor-league role, he served an integral role in helping injured players rehab from injuries, including several players who spent the offseason at the team's spring training complex in Lakeland so they could have access to equipment and expertise."
