April 13, 2005
April 13, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw Jazz at the Duck welcomes Grammy-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger Chip McNeill this Thursday, April 14. Performing from 9 p.m. until midnight at Walden Inn’s Fluttering Duck, McNeill will entertain audience members with his high-energy style. Joining McNeill will be DePauw’s own Gary Walter, piano; and Paul Musser, bass; as well as drummer Chris Baker, who hails from Champaign, Illinois.
A veteran of the Maynard Ferguson Big Band and Woody Herman Orchestra, Chip McNeill has also toured extensively with Latin trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. His playing and arrangements can be heard on Sandoval’s releases Americana and Hot House, the latter of which won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance. McNeill’s latest release under his own name is 2003’s Radio Improved. He is currently the director of jazz studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
“I had the good fortune to study under and play with Chip, while at the University of Illinois,” says bassist Paul Musser, assistant to the dean of the school of music at DePauw. “His harmonic vocabulary and nstrumental technique are really impressive, but it’s really his musical devotion that sets him apart.”
