Fast Food Nation, by Sunday's Commencement Speaker Eric Schlosser, to Become Motion Picture
May 20, 2005
May 20, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - "Director Richard Linklater, the filmmaker behind Dazed and Confused, is set to make a big-screen version of the book Fast Food Nation, notes a story from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. "Written by journalist Eric Schlosser, Fast Food Nation is a damning exploration of how restaurant chains like McDonald's have changed North American culture. The book has caused a sensation since it was published in 2001," the story adds. Schlosser will provide the keynote address at DePauw's 166th Annual Commencement Sunday.
"Schlosser helped Linklater write the script for the big-screen adaptation," the article continues. "It's not known if the film will be a documentary, but the book does not have a straightforward narrative: instead, it is an extended piece of reportage that follows Schlosser as he travels around the U.S. chronicling the history and effects of fast food."

A selection committee composed largely of DePauw seniors chose Schlosser as the commencement speaker. The author visited DePauw on November 11, 2003 to deliver the Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture (access a story with video and audio clips here).
